Tips on How To Get Rid of Acne

Acne is the bane of every teenagers existence am I right? That's what I used to think. As a teen I was one of the lucky ones that never got acne. Ha! Well, the wool was pulled over my eyes. As I entered into college my acne problems really started and only continued off and on from my 20s with the hormonal turmoil of having kids, and now still.

I am not a dermatologist and all of these tips are ones that I have come across, learned about from my dermatologist, and through lots of trial and error. My skin isn't perfect and I still have flareups, but for the most part it has gotten better with a consistent skincare routine.

Tip #1: Wash your hands and Don't touch your face! 

So much bacteria, dirt, oils, etc get onto our hands. So try not to touch your face! Touching your face could cause flare-ups. Tip #2: Wash your face twice a day (and after sweating)

Sweating, especially when wearing a hat or helmet, can make acne worse. So wash your face with special attention given around the hairline and be sure to wash for at least a good minute. Use circular motions taking attention to get up and underneath your fine facial hairs (yes, we all have them). Tip #6: Rinse with Lukewarm water, not HOT. 

Tip #7: Moisturize. Even if your skin is oily, contrary to popular belief, if your skin is oily it actually needs more moisture and hydration not less. I went to my first LimeLife by Alcone yearly convention, aka, Palooza. This years theme was "Under One Sun" because the company is going global we had beauty guides in attendance from USA, Canada, and the UK, and France (as we will be opening up there soon).

Dry or Dehydrated Skin? What's the difference?

Pretty often the words moisturize and hydrate are used interchangeably when it comes to 

skin care. However, they mean two completely different things and why some people 

moisturize like crazy and still feel and look dry. It is important to distinguish between

the two so they can be treated properly.

DRY SKIN TYPE

Generally, dry skin is considered a skin type and means lack of oil
being produced in theskin. This skin type is characterized by smaller 
pores, parched skin and may have flakey patches. As we age our skin 
becomes dryer as we produce less oil. The use of topical skin products 
like prescription Retin-A or acne medications may also contribute to 
a lack of oil in the skin.

DEHYDRATED SKIN CONDITION

When the skin lacks water it is considered to be dehydrated. This is a
skin condition that any skin type can have including the oiliest. It is most
characterized by tightness, but alsomay be itchy or sensitive. Often fine 
lines and wrinkles may be accentuated and makeup may settle into those 
lines making the skin look older than it really is. You simply may just be
dehydrated!

If you have ever noticed your skin feeling shiny and oily, but tight at the
same time this is a clear indicator that your skin is dehydrated and lacking
water. 

Causes that contribute to the dehydration of the skin are many environment
factors such as lack of humidity in the air, flying on an airplane, hormones, 
steam rooms, overly stripping skin care products like many cleansers and 
overly exfoliating products.

MOISTURIZING SKIN CARE PRODUCTS

Moisturizing products make the skin feel softer and smoother. The function
of moisturizer is to form a protective barrier on the skin preventing moisture
loss. These types of products contain emollient ingredients such as pomifera
oil, sunflower oil, apricot oil, hemp seed oil, rose hip oil to name a few. These
ingredients essentially coat the skin to trap hydration in as well as provide
nourishing antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits.

This means if your skin is truly dehydrated and needs hydration, applying
moisturizer really won't hydrate your skin much if at all. You first need 
water soluble humectant ingredients to lock in.

HYDRATING SKIN CARE PRODUCTS

Skin care products that hydrate the skin contain water soluble humectant
ingredients. They work by attracting water molecules to the skin like a
magnet. Some of these ingredients include vegetable glycerin, sorbitol and
my personal favorite hyaluronic acid. By far the gold standard in hydrating
ingredients is hyaluronic acid. This ingredient our bodies naturally produce
to lubricate our joints and holds 1000 times its weight in water! This tiny
molecule will also take a crinkled skin cell, plump it and make it nice and
round smoothing fine lines.

DRINKING WATER + HYDRATION

A common myth is drinking water will hydrate the skin. This is actually
FALSE! Only 1% of what you ingest actually reaches the layers of the skin.
This means when you drink water it has to pass through your entire digestive
tract which is pretty hostile and acidic, excretory organs and muscle tissue.
The process is too quick and you'll urinate it out before it ever reaches the skin. 

The myth comes from people seeing a difference in the skin after drinking
a good amount of water for a period of time. Well, you have your kidneys to
thank for flushing out all those toxins making the skin appear better. However,
it does not actually lubricate the skin and topical application of products is the
best most effective way to do so.

LimeLight by Alcone - my new adventure as a mompreneur!

It has been busy, hectic and crazy with three boys, school, sports, home, business, you know that little thing called..... life.

Well, a lot has changed in a few months. Moving into our "old, but new" home and starting a business. I've gone back to work after being a stay-at-home mom for the past decade or so. Well, I'm still a stay-at-home mom - turned mom-preneur. I've started selling an all natural, chemical free skincare line and professional grade makeup with the company LimeLight by Alcone. His chances of survival were 30%.  He sought immediate care with chemotherapy, but it wasn't enough. He passed away in July of that year at the young age of 53.

Scrapbooking My Kids School/Life Albums

We have finally moved into our new home and the dust, literally, has nearly settled. My office space is not quite as neat and organized as I would like it, but I am so excited and inspired to get started on my 16 year old son's scrapbook!

I have two other kids whose scrapbooks are pretty bare. I'm hoping the systems I have set up many years ago will be helpful now!

I had started by ASSESSING what I had and what I've done over the years. I realized I had a few albums that were partially done. LOTS of loose photos, digital photos, photos on cd/dvd, and negatives.

Next, I started GATHERING all of my photos, papers, art, memorabilia - basically everything I had from their school years.  I have been doing this through the years. I started out compiling everything into filing bins with file folders labeled by age and then by school year (birth, 1, 2, 3, preschool, kindergarten, grade 1, etc).  The file bins were similar to these I found at Staples.

Now that we've moved into our new home I have a smaller office/creative space. I have set up a temporary desk until I decide what I will do and bought two commercial size filing cabinets, that are  acting as temporary desk supports. I chose these Staples filing cabinets because they are heavier duty and much deeper than the others I had found. I have three kids and have designated a drawer for each of them and this is where I now hold all of their school stuff. It's easy to file things away now that I have the drawers and files in place. 

I have already collected and sorted all of their stuff because I had been doing it all along as their items came in. If you haven't sorted the school stuff you will want to do that per child. I pulled out all of their stuff and organized it by year and/or teacher. I used stickies and wrote the grade/year/teacher's name on it and sorted everything into piles. Once sorted, I placed everything into file folders as "holders" until I could scrapbook them. I didn't make any decisions as to what to keep or toss. At that moment, I wanted to just sort and organize. (Batch process!)

This is where I am now. The next step will be to DECIDE WHAT I WANT TO KEEP OR WHAT THE KIDS WANT TO KEEP. For items that are too big I will photograph and include that in their album. For other papers and artwork I will either cut it down to size or scan it and use in the Project Life App to create a page. I may also make digital pages using photoshop depending on the items.

I currently have two different scanners. One is the Fujitsu Scansnap ix500. It's fast and efficient. It can scan a lot of pages at once. You can go into the settings and have it save as a jpeg or pdf. You can set the image quality to automatic resolution or as high as 600 dpi for color/grey scanning or 1200 dpi for black and white scanning.  You can choose to scan in color, grey, black and white or automatic color detection. Duplex (double-sided) or simplex (single-sided). AND it can be programmed to be used wirelessly! It's a little pricey, but worth the money. ($495.99 at Staples, but you may be able to find it for less elsewhere).

I also have the Epson Perfection V750 Pro. I've had this one for many years. I don't use it quite as often, but find it is great for scanning older prints. It can scan up to 6400 optical resolution and can automatically remove dust and surface defects from your photos and can even remove scratches from old black and white photos. It is also great for batch scanning negatives, slides, and more. I haven't used it to its capacity, but it has been great for scanning more fragile or bulkier items. 

My next step is going to be to go through, sort, scan, and photograph starting with preschool.

If you'd rather not deal with any paper at all, there is a digital version that you can use on your computer using photoshop elements or photoshop. You will need to know the basics of adding photos into photoshop (but this is a very small learning curve).
